Sweet potato mash with curly kale

Curly kale sweet mash with smoked sausage is a typical Dutch dish and a popular winter-time staple in Dutch homes. Most of us know that smoked sausage isn’t exactly healthy, and ordinary potatoes aren’t the best choice, either. Ordinary potatoes don’t contain a lot of nutrients and have a high glycaemic index, giving you a quick sugar spike. It makes more sense, therefore, to substitute sweet potatoes for ordinary ones. Sweet potato contains a lot of beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and a lot of antioxidants. Curly kale, too, is extremely healthy and contains vitamins A, C, and K. In addition, curly kale is very rich in fibre, copper, calcium, vitamin B6, potassium, and is packed with antioxidants.


  • Coconut oil

  • 600 g curly kale, sliced

  • 3 to 4 large sweet potatoes

  • 3 onions

  • 3 cloves of garlic

  • 150 ml milk or almond milk

  • Salt and pepper

  • Optional: feta cheese


Place the kale in a large saucepan and bring it to the boil. Peel and chop the sweet potatoes, adding them to the kale 10 minutes into cooking time. Let them cook together for a further 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, finely cut the onions and garlic cloves. Heat the coconut oil in a pan and fry the onion and garlic until translucent.

When the kale and sweet potatoes have cooked long enough, drain and place them back in the pan. Add the milk and mash coarsely. Season with pepper and salt, adding the onions and garlic last.

If you wish, you may serve the mash pot with feta crumbled on top.
